Homewood Health Centre offers unique and challenging placement opportunities for students seeking to learn more and develop skills in the field of mental health. Students will work with and learn from exceptional preceptors and collaborate with a dynamic interdisciplinary team of up to 19 different types of health care professionals to provide holistic care.

Homewood has over 13 different units and departments to offer a range of individual and group-based programming to adults in inpatient and outpatient settings. Overall, students have consistently provided excellent feedback about their learning experiences which has helped prepare them for practice.

Homewood Health Centre serves as a teaching hospital through our partnership with McMaster University, providing education and training across several clinical disciplines. We offer postgraduate psychiatry electives that highlight a range of specialized and often hard-to-access clinical experiences, including acute psychiatry, consultation liaison, assertive community treatment, mood and anxiety with concurrent disorders, traumatic stress injury with concurrent disorders, and interventional psychiatry.

For Students

Clinical student placements are offered to support new clinicians, ranging from physician residents, medical clerks, psychology residents, nursing, occupational therapy, social workers, trauma-trained therapists, recreational therapists, dieticians and more.
Preceptor training focused on relationship development, giving and receiving feedback, dealing with conflict and the evaluation process.
Students are provided off-unit training, which includes general orientation to the facility, focused direction to their profession, and computer training on our Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
Amenities that students can participate in at Homewood include: an on-site recreation centre; outdoor tennis and basketball courts and outdoor walking trails. We also offer reasonably priced on-site parking and on-site cafeteria.
