Eating disorders are classified as severe mental health conditions characterized by abnormal eating behaviors that significantly impact both physical and psychological well-being. At Homewood Health Centre, we offer a structured and intensive 16-week phased treatment program emphasizing weight restoration, symptom interruption, stabilization, and nutritional rehabilitation. This multidisciplinary treatment approach is spearheaded by a dedicated psychiatrist, nurse practitioner and social worker, supported by an extensive team of healthcare professionals.
The inpatient program at Homewood Health Centre is designed to address the complex and individualized needs of clients diagnosed with the following disorders:
At Homewood Health Centre, our evidence-informed program is accessible to individuals aged 16 and above, offering a highly personalized treatment model.
All eating disorder treatment options are provided on an inpatient basis, exclusively for individuals enrolled in the program at the Homewood Health Centre. This focused environment ensures comprehensive care tailored to each patient’s unique clinical needs.
The duration and components of treatment are contingent upon the specific symptoms and conditions presented by the individual. The 16-week program integrates interventions to address challenges identified by the individual, in consultation with their treatment team including comorbid disorders, trauma or substance use disorders. Upon admission, patients undergo an initial assessment conducted by the primary care team to establish a personalized treatment plan. Patients are encouraged to initiate their recovery by contacting the intake team directly to begin this process.
The process of recovery extends beyond the completion of inpatient treatment and is enhanced by ongoing medical, psychological, and nutritional support. Details regarding the structure and availability of follow-up care will vary and are tailored to the needs of each individual.
A referral from a Physician or Nurse Practitioner is required for admission to the Eating Disorders Program. Additionally, participation in the program must be voluntary. Specific questions related to the referral processes can be answered by intake coordinators or at the Homewood Health Centre.
For residents of Ontario with extended health benefits, the financial cost of treatment may be completely covered. Prospective patients are advised to consult with the intake team for detailed information regarding eligibility and funding arrangements.
If individuals or their healthcare providers are uncertain about the presence of an eating disorder, Homewood Health Centre offers nutritional and therapeutic assessments. These assessments are conducted by our psychiatrist, nurse practitioner, licensed therapist and a registered dietitian. The assessment may be completed in person or through virtual platforms. Contact the intake team to schedule an evaluation and recommendations, or to determine program fit.
Eating disorders arise from an intricate interplay of biological, psychological, and socio-environmental factors. Contributing causes include genetic predisposition, environmental stressors, and societal influences. Furthermore, eating disorders frequently co-occur with mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which may both reinforce and exacerbate disordered eating behaviors.
While eating disorders can manifest across diverse age groups, genders, and ethnic or racial backgrounds, certain groups show elevated prevalence rates. Females, particularly during adolescence and early adulthood, are disproportionately affected. Current estimates suggest that one in four women and one in ten men experience an eating disorder in their lifetime. Although the prevalence is higher among females, males represent approximately 20–25% of diagnosed cases in Canada.
Support for individuals with eating disorders involves adopting a collaborative, compassionate, non-judgmental, and patient-centered approach. Caregivers are encouraged to seek support and community, and educate themselves about eating disorders to better understand the challenges faced by affected individuals. Advocacy for professional treatment is vital, though attempts to pressure or control the individual should be avoided. Conversations related to weight or appearance should be approached with caution and sensitivity.
Families are integral to the treatment and recovery process, particularly in the context of adolescent patients. Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) equips parents and caregivers with evidence-based strategies to effectively engage with and support loved ones undergoing eating disorder treatment.
