Opioid addiction is characterized by an overwhelming urge to use the drug, a loss of control over one’s use, continued use despite harmful consequences and physical withdrawal symptoms upon cessation of use. Opioid addiction can have catastrophic impact on individuals and their families and even infrequent use of opioids results in a significant increase in risk of death by overdose.
Some opioids are medications that may have originally been prescribed by a physician for pain treatment, while other opioids such as fentanyl, are commonly used as illicit or street-obtained drugs. Regardless of how they are obtained, they are highly addictive substances that contribute to thousands of opioid toxicity deaths each year.
The impact of opioid use on you and your family can be significant and long-lasting. It is essential to seek help and support to address opioid use and mitigate these impacts. With the help of skilled clinicians, appropriate medications, a structured program, a strong support network, and a well-designed recovery plan, you can achieve long-term recovery from opioid use disorders.
Programs for opioid use include medical withdrawal and stabilization, abstinence-based approaches, and support for returning to work in safety-sensitive positions. These programs take a holistic approach, incorporating bio-psycho-social-spiritual dimensions of healing.
