Eating disorders are a group of serious conditions characterized by abnormal eating habits that negatively impact a person’s physical and mental health. Eating disorders often involve a disturbance in body image and a fear of gaining weight. They can involve severe restriction of food intake, excessive exercise, or other forms of bingeing, such as vomiting or laxative use. These disorders can include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder.
Homewood Health Centre offers Canada’s largest inpatient eating disorder program to those 16 or older.
Eating disorders can have a severe impact on your physical and mental health and affect people of all ages, genders, races, and body sizes.
Although committing to treatment for an eating disorder can be difficult, recovery is achievable with the help of a skilled team of clinicians, a comprehensive treatment program, and the support of family and peers.
Programs help individuals: develop and restore healthy eating habits and attitudes; learn about balanced nutrition, physical activity, and other aspects of eating disorders; improve family, marital and personal relationships; and learn healthy ways to cope with emotional difficulties.
