Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) treatment

A safe, effective option for people living with treatment-resistant depression

If you’ve tried medication or therapy without the results you hoped for, rTMS may offer a new path forward.
This non-invasive, evidence-based treatment helps many people experience real relief from symptoms of depression — often when other treatments haven’t worked.

What is rTMS?

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) uses focused electromagnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation.

Unlike electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), rTMS doesn’t require anesthesia, sedation, or recovery time. You remain awake and alert throughout the session and can resume normal activities immediately afterward.

rTMS is clinically proven to help people with treatment-resistant depression — those who haven’t responded to two or more antidepressant medications.

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression and haven’t seen improvement with medication or other therapies
  • Are medically stable and able to attend regular treatment sessions
  • Do not have metal implants in your head or neck, a history of seizures, or certain neurological conditions

Your physician referral and a comprehensive review by a psychiatrist will confirm whether this treatment is right for you.

Before Treatment

Your care team will review your medical history, medications, and overall health. You’ll be asked to avoid alcohol and recreational substances before each session and arrive with clean, dry hair.

During your first visit, we’ll determine your individual treatment threshold — the amount of stimulation your brain needs for optimal results. This helps ensure your treatment is both safe and effective.

During Treatment

  • You’ll sit comfortably in a treatment chair while a magnetic coil is positioned against your head.
  • The coil delivers gentle magnetic pulses — many people describe it as a light tapping or tingling feeling on the scalp.
  • The procedure is pain-free, does not require sedation, and takes about 20–40 minutes.
  • You’ll stay awake the entire time, and ear protection is provided.
  • Most treatment courses involve daily sessions, five days per week, over four to six weeks.

After Treatment

You can drive yourself home and return to normal activities immediately after each session.
To support treatment effectiveness:

  • Avoid alcohol and recreational substances throughout your course of rTMS
  • Continue your regular medications unless advised otherwise by your physician
  • Attend all scheduled sessions to maintain treatment consistency

Clinical studies show that:

  • About two-thirds of people with treatment-resistant depression experience a significant improvement in symptoms
  • Roughly 40% achieve full remission
Many people begin noticing mood improvements within two to three weeks, though individual results vary.

If you’re not seeing improvement after several weeks, your psychiatrist will review your treatment plan and adjust parameters as needed.
