What to Watch For

If you suspect a friend or family member has problematic substance use or is struggling with their mental health, watch for the following signs:

missing work or school
getting lower grades at school
losing interest in activities they previously enjoyed
changes in their sleep patterns
having difficulty remembering things or staying alert (seems in a fog)
having extreme mood changes
no longer spending time with family or friends
behaviour changes
spending money on drugs or alcohol
taking risks to get and use drugs
turning to drugs or alcohol to deal with their problems

How to Start the Conversation

If you feel that someone’s mental health issue or substance use impacts their ability to function well, there are ways to initiate the conversation and show that you care. Be prepared for strong negative emotions. Let them know you care.

Ask them if they’re okay and tell them they can talk to you safely.
Be aware of the language you use. Avoid using language that stigmatizes mental health or substance use disorders.
Be compassionate. No one wants to feel depressed, anxious or be addicted to drugs or alcohol.
Tell them you are worried because you love them.
They may want to tell you about mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, trauma or violence. Validate their concerns.
Be prepared for a negative reaction such as anger or defensiveness. Be patient and come back to the conversation at another time.
Let them know that you will support them and offer information on professional help.
Remind them that help is available and their mental health or substance use problem can be treated.
